Google debuted its Gemini AI last year. Since then, the search giant continues to make improvements in the GenAI space. This year, it has found its way into the latest Pixel phones as well as the Galaxy S24 series. Now, to make things confusing, the company offers two different products but with the same name – Gemini app and Gemini AI Models. Both serve different purposes and distinct functionalities.
Firstly, the Gemini app is a user-facing application with a chatbot-like interface. It is designed for everyday usage and can be accessed on compatible Android devices. Meanwhile, the LLM model is also called Gemini and is offered in Nano, Pro, and Ultra versions with each of them designed for a wide range of advanced tasks.

Now, that the confusion is settled, the Gemini app is a specific application of the broader capabilities of the Gemini AI models. On smartphones, it replaces Google Assistant which has been around for decades.
6 things you can do with the Gemini App on your Phone
There are several personal use cases of the Gemini app on your phone that enhance the overall usage experience. Although the paid version offers advanced functions, the free version is no less and excels at a host of tasks. A noteworthy mention is that the Gemini app supports extensions that are mostly Google-based services and apps. Hence, these have to be enabled to access certain features. We list down the 6 things you can do with the Gemini app on your phone.

1. Create a trip itinerary
This is one of the most popular use cases of any AI chatbot. With the Gemini app, you can ask the chatbot to create a travel itinerary of the place you want to visit. It will deliver a detailed result if you include the key components of your trip like duration, passengers and pace in the prompt. That’s not all, Gemini will also help you fetch crucial travel information like visa requirements for international trips.
The app comes with support for Google Flights, Google Hotels, and Google Maps extensions. As the names suggest, enabling those would mean that you can ask specific prompts to get the relevant information you want. These include flight timings, hotel rates, and directions to nearby places within the app. It will also be presented in a neat, structured table.
2. Summarise
If you can’t seem to find the most accurate YouTube video on a particular subject, you can just ask the Gemini app to recommend the result that you would want to see. Additionally, if you do not have the time to watch any video, the AI chatbot can help you extract vital information from it. You can just add a prompt that says – ‘give me a summary of this video’.
The same summarise function can be performed for web pages if the content is too long and you need a quick rundown of the key points. Additionally, it can also summarise long, boring emails by simply asking it to summarise a particular email from the sender’s name.
Just be sure to include the link to the content while entering the prompt.
The app will give you solid nitty-gritty details regarding what the video is about.
3. Create a diet plan
Trying to stay healthy and scourging through a myriad of information on the web to create a solid plan? It won’t be necessary anymore. With the help of the Gemini app, you can just ask for a prompt that will deliver you the solution you’re looking for. You have to be as specific as possible in the prompt like mentioning your age, your weight, workout routine, and the goal you want to achieve.

Once the prompt is given, Gemini will do its best to provide a robust answer in an easy-to-understand and simplified manner. It can also display the results in a table. The AI is also capable of creating personalised meal and workout-based plans. However, a word of advice – one should always be cautious of following web-based search results when it comes to health-related stuff.
4. Email management
The Google Workspace is another extension that can be integrated with Gemini AI. It allows access to your Gmail, Drive, and Docs. The AI can be super helpful in email management. This is because it can save you from endlessly scrolling the inbox to look for that one particular mail.
You can ask Gemini to – ‘search mails from the sender name, about a particular topic, or by subject lines’. It will show you a list of results that match your request. Once you find what you’re looking for, you can jump right into Gmail by selecting it.

Gemini can also help you write and draft a reply to emails. You can say – draft a reply to the email from the sender’s name. Be sure to include the email topic and sender’s name in the prompt.
5. Find files in Drive
If your Google Drive is cluttered with a lot of files, it could be a hassle to search for the one you need even with the built-in search. Asking the Gemini AI to ‘find files about a particular subject’ will pull up relevant files or docs. Here as well, you can get a summary of the document with a prompt that is similar to YouTube and webpages.
6. Analyse images and objects
While this is similar to Google Lens, Gemini AI takes things a step ahead. In the Gemini app, you can snap a photo and ask the chatbot to identify what the product or object in the image is. This function will also throw up additional information about the product you’re searching for.
The aforementioned use cases of the Gemini AI will make you a lot more productive. A noteworthy mention is that these can be performed on both the Gemini app on your software as well as the chatbot’s web version. Also, another thing to keep in mind is that generic prompts will yield generic results.
