iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: What’s different?

Apple’s new iPhone 17e brings key refinements to the entry-level lineup, but is it enough to justify the jump from the already solid iPhone 16e? This comparison highlights the practical differences and performance improvements between these two accessible models.

Design and Display: Subtle changes

The display size and notch design remain the same as the iPhone 16e, and the rear design is also unchanged. The only noticeable update is the arrival of a new Soft Pink colour variant.

Durability has been enhanced with the new Ceramic Shield 2 protection on the display, offering up to 3x better scratch resistance. The aluminium frame and IP68 rating from the previous generation have been retained.

Performance: A Significant Core Upgrade

One of the most noteworthy changes lies in the inclusion of the new chipset. The iPhone 16e featured the impressive A18 chip. While powerful, the iPhone 17e takes a significant leap forward with the A19 chip.

This is not just about higher benchmark numbers. It is also about improved efficiency and support for more demanding tasks and future software features.

For everyday users, apps are likely to open faster, multitasking will feel smoother, and demanding applications, including complex games, will run better on the A19. The new chip is also expected to offer better longevity in terms of performance and future iOS update compatibility.

Cameras: Software-driven upgrades

Both phones feature a 48MP Fusion single rear camera and a 12MP front camera. Being a newer model, the 17e brings software-based improvements, including next-generation Portraits with Focus and Depth control.

Battery and connectivity upgrades

The iPhone 16e delivered strong performance with up to 26 hours of video playback. The iPhone 17e also promises the same video playback time. Since Apple does not mention the exact battery capacity, it appears that both devices pack similar batteries.

While the 16e supported slower Qi wireless charging, the iPhone 17e steps up to 25W MagSafe wireless charging. This means noticeably faster wireless top-ups when required.

In terms of connectivity, both iPhones support Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB-C 2.0, and satellite communication during emergencies.

One new addition in the connectivity department on the iPhone 17e is the Apple C1x modem. This is Apple’s next-generation modem designed to improve network performance and power efficiency over the modem used in the iPhone 16e.

In real-world usage, the C1x modem is expected to deliver more stable cellular performance, better handling of network congestion, and improved power efficiency during data-heavy tasks such as streaming, video calls, and large downloads.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e price differences

The iPhone 17e has 25GB and 512GB versions priced at Rs 64,900 and Rs 84,900, respectively. It comes in a Soft Pink along with Black and White. In comparison, the 16e, which comes in Black and White shades only, is priced at Rs 47,900 for the 128GB version. Its 256GB and 512GB editions are priced at Rs 61,790 and Rs 80,690.

The iPhone 17e offers meaningful upgrades in performance, charging speed, and connectivity, especially with the A19 chip and Apple C1x modem. However, the iPhone 16e still remains a strong value option at its current pricing, making the upgrade worthwhile mainly for users seeking better longevity and faster wireless charging.
