ChatGPT memory glitch: How to back up and restore your data

ChatGPT users, there’s one thing you have to do right now, and it’s not trying out a new feature or a prompt. Rather, it’s to back up your chat history and memories. Why? Because ChatGPT is glitching for many users, and their saved memories are being lost or corrupted.

While OpenAI hasn’t confirmed this glitch, Reddit users have flagged it, so it’s time to take action before it’s too late. In this guide, we’ll show you how exactly you can protect, backup, and restore your ChatGPT data, so Doctor Strange’s memory spell doesn’t work in reality.

How to back up and restore your ChatGPT memories

ChatGPT’s memory function is pretty cool, as it saves your likes and dislikes and remembers everything about you. But your memory in ChatGPT may soon disappear due to a recent glitch.

Several users have complained that the memory feature has become inactive, while some say their memories have been duplicated or reverted to older versions. Having said that, you should immediately back up and restore your ChatGPT memories before they disappear. Here’s how.

Step 1: First, you need to check whether the memory function is still active. To do that, Open ChatGPT, head to Settings > Personalisation > and make sure ‘Reference saved memories’ and ‘Reference chat history’ are enabled.

Step 2: Now, to back up your memories, just go to Personalisation again, and click Manage under the Memories section.

Step 3: Now, copy all the saved memories and then paste them into a document or a notes app. This way, you have a backup of your memories; in fact, they vanish.

In case your memories have already been deleted, you can try logging out and then logging in to ChatGPT. This trick might bring up your older memories.
