How to clean an air purifier

It’s no secret how important it is to breathe clean air. Air purifiers installed in our homes and offices dutifully play a crucial role in achieving this by filtering out the impurities. But like every other appliance, air purifiers, too, need basic maintenance to run efficiently.

If your air purifier’s replacement filter indicator is illuminated or if you are experiencing increased noise levels and household odours, it’s time to clean your air purifier. Wondering how to? Don’t worry, let’s delve into the step-by-step method of cleaning an air purifier.

Steps to clean an air purifier

Following these easy-to-follow steps, you can clean your air purifier like a breeze:

1. Switch off and unplug the air purifier
2. Remove the filters
3. Clean the filters
4. Wipe out the air purifiers exterior
5. Put the filter back and switch on

1. Switch off and unplug the air purifier

Ensure maximum safety during the cleaning process by turning off the air purifier. Unplugging the device ensures maximum safety by eliminating the risk of electrical shocks, and guarantees a safe environment during the cleaning process. It is not just applicable for air purifier but recommended for every electrical appliancance that you plan to clean or maintain.

2. Remove the filters

Generally, most air purifiers have the pre-filter and HEPA filter installed inside the appliance. A pre-filter is the gatekeeper between the appliance and the HEPA filter as it filters out the large airborne debris like hair, pet fur, and clumps of dust from clogging up the delicate HEPA filter.

The HEPA filter captures the dust, allergens, and minute particles that are invisible to the naked eye. To locate these filters, refer to the user manual and follow the instructions to remove these filters.

3. Clean the filters

Read the manufacturer‘s instruction to understand whether rinsing or vacuuming is recommended depending on the air purifier model and design. Don’t use any sharp objects to clean the filters as any damage can cost hefty. Gently clean them with soft brushes and either vaccum them or rinse them in soapy water.

4. Wipe out the air purifier exterior

You can use a vaccum cleaner or a soft damp-cloth to wipe out the exterior of the air purifier. You can also use soft brush attachment to clean the outside lint or debris. While cleaning the exterior, pay extra care while cleaning the air intake holes and air exit holes.

5. Put the filter back and switch on

You can put your filter back and switch it on. Now your air purifier is at its best for use.

Following these steps to clean your air purifiers on a periodic basis will definitely prevent you from unrequired servicing and will work efficiently.
