How to transfer data from old laptop to new laptop without losing files

If you’ve just bought a new laptop, one of the first things you’ll want to figure out is how to move your data over without losing any files. This includes everything from documents and photos to work folders and saved projects.

In most cases, it can all be transferred in a single transfer session, instead of moving individual files. Here’s how to transfer everything from your old laptop to your new one properly.

How to transfer data from an old laptop to a new laptop without losing files

Transferring data from an old laptop to a new one is a common practice, and there are a few reliable ways to move everything across. Modern operating systems and tools make it possible to move everything without losing files. Here are the easiest and safest ways to transfer data from an old laptop to a new laptop without losing files.

Method 1: Using Cloud storage

Cloud storage is one of the simplest options, especially if both laptops have a stable and fast internet connection and you need to transfer small or medium-sized files.

1. Upload files from the old laptop

Sign in to a cloud service such as OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox. Select the folders you want to move, whether it is documents, photos, videos, and project files and upload them.

2. Sign in on the new laptop

Then, log in to the same cloud account on your new laptop.

3. Download or sync your files

Download the files locally or enable syncing so they appear automatically on the new device.

Method 2: Transfer files using an external drive

An external hard drive or USB flash drive provides a direct, offline way to move data and works great when there are plenty of large files or full local backups to transfer.

1. Connect the drive to the old laptop

Plug in the drive and wait for it to appear in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).

2. Copy your data

Drag and drop the folders you want to transfer onto the external drive.

3. Safely eject the drive

Eject the drive properly once copying is complete to avoid file corruption.

4. Connect the drive to the new laptop

Plug the drive into the new laptop and copy the files to your preferred folders.

Both Windows and macOS include tools designed specifically for moving data to a new computer.

On Windows

Use Windows Backup or PC migration tools during setup. Sign in with the same Microsoft account to restore files, settings, and preferences.

On Mac

Use Migration Assistant. Connect both Macs using Wi-Fi, Thunderbolt, or an external drive, then choose what to transfer, including files, apps, and user accounts.

And that’s how to transfer data from one laptop to another. Good Luck!
